What is Pest Management?

Insect and wildlife removal techniques are included in pest control. A pest management specialist will conduct a check to look for pest damage or pest indicators. They will then implement successful treatment strategies to address the issue and prevent it from reoccurring.

While the list of common pests is lengthy, most homeowners don’t have to deal with them all. These animals can contaminate food supplies, damage furniture, and infest food preparation areas. Some are harmful to humans, while others are simply nuisances. Mosquitoes are particularly troublesome during the summer, as they are attracted to stagnant water and other areas. Bed bugs, while not harmful to humans, can bite and cause sleeplessness and anxiety.

Physical and Chemical Methods

Pest control methods have their own differences, but they have one thing in common: they target the wrong organisms. If you use a chemical pesticide, you are essentially destroying the organism that is the target of your control method. But if you use a physical method, you are merely suppressing the pest that you are trying to control. Physical methods use poisons that are toxic to the organism they target.

Biocontrol Agents

Biological control is an alternative to pesticides. Unlike traditional approaches, it does not aim to maintain a population balance between the pest and its prey or host. Biological agents are released in sufficient quantities to knock the pest population back down. In general, most commercially available insect pathogen formulations are released in an inundative manner. However, the release frequency and location must be determined to ensure the biocontrol agent is effective against the pest.

Insect Predators

Predators are a key ingredient in pest control. Some species of predators are more effective at suppressing pests than others. Some species are essential in early-season and late-season pest suppression, while others have minimal effects but are beneficial to overall pest mortality. The most important predatory species are lady bird beetles, ground beetles, rove beetles, and stink bugs.

Insecticides

Insecticides are highly persistent organic chemicals. They can be present in both the sediment and water column. Their bioavailability depends on the medium in which they are present and on their temperature and concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and suspended sediments. Insecticides may be absorbed or deposited by fish or benthic animals. The effect of these pesticides depends on the extent of their absorption, the duration of their exposure and their toxicity.

Environmental Pest Control

Environmental pest control techniques are used by experts to prevent damage from pests and maintain a healthy, clean environment. They minimize environmental impact by concentrating on repair work and pest behavior monitoring.
